“In life, change is inevitable. In business, change is vital.”
- Warren G. Bennis, leadership scholar, consultant, author

In the late 1970s, yeah, I’m that old, I read an article in Scientific American about a company that made semiconductor memory chips. They had recently added to their product line something called the ‘microprocessor’. That company was Intel. At the time I was in school studying fluid power systems. After reading the article it was clear the impact these chips would have on our world. I switched to studying computer electronics because I wanted to be part of it.
For the past 40+ years we’ve seen amazing advances in technology. Almost all of them though are because of the microprocessor. Nothing since has risen to that level of disruption and change. Until now.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the most popular buzzwords in the business world in recent years. It refers to a range of technologies that can analyze and process large amounts of data, learn from that data, and make predictions or recommendations based on that learning. While many large corporations have already implemented AI solutions, small and mid-sized businesses may feel that AI is out of their reach. However, there are several reasons why small and mid-sized businesses should be using AI, and how it can help them to compete with larger businesses in today's market.
1. Improve Customer Service
One of the main advantages of AI is its ability to provide personalized customer service. By using chatbots and virtual assistants, small and mid-sized businesses can provide 24/7 customer service, without having to hire additional staff. Chatbots can also answer frequently asked questions, allowing customer service representatives to focus on more complex issues. Additionally, AI-powered customer service can help to improve response times, reduce waiting times, and provide customers with a more positive experience.
2. Increase Efficiency and Productivity
Small and mid-sized businesses often have limited resources, and AI can help to optimize those resources. For example, AI-powered scheduling software can help businesses to manage their time more effectively, reducing the time spent on administrative tasks. AI can also be used to automate repetitive tasks, freeing up employees to focus on more complex and creative work. By using AI to streamline operations, small and mid-sized businesses can become more productive, which can lead to increased profitability.
3. Gain Insights from Data
Data is becoming increasingly important for businesses of all sizes, and AI can help small and mid-sized businesses to gain valuable insights from their data. By analyzing customer data, sales data, and other types of data, businesses can identify patterns and trends that they may have otherwise missed. This can help businesses to make more informed decisions, such as identifying the most profitable products or services, or predicting future trends in the market. By using AI to analyze data, small and mid-sized businesses can gain a competitive advantage over their competitors.
4.Improve Marketing Strategies
AI can also help small and mid-sized businesses to improve their marketing strategies. By analyzing customer data, businesses can identify the most effective marketing channels and tactics. For example, AI-powered advertising platforms can analyze customer data to target specific demographics, increasing the chances of conversion. Additionally, AI can be used to personalize marketing messages, increasing the chances of engagement and conversion. By using AI to improve their marketing strategies, small and mid-sized businesses can increase their visibility, attract more customers, and improve their bottom line.
5. Enhance Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity is a growing concern for businesses of all sizes, and AI can help small and mid-sized businesses to protect their sensitive data. AI-powered cybersecurity solutions can monitor network activity, identify potential threats, and respond to security breaches in real-time. Additionally, AI can be used to detect and prevent fraud, reducing the risk of financial losses. By using AI to enhance their cybersecurity measures, small and mid-sized businesses can protect their data and reputation, which is critical for long-term success.
6. Reduce Costs
Finally, AI can help small and mid-sized businesses to reduce costs. By automating repetitive tasks, businesses can reduce the need for manual labor, which can save time and money. Additionally, AI can help businesses to optimize their inventory management, reducing the costs associated with excess inventory or stockouts. By using AI to reduce costs, small and mid-sized businesses can increase their profitability and reinvest those savings into other areas of their business.
Small and mid-sized businesses should be using AI to stay competitive in today's market. AI can help businesses to improve customer service, increase efficiency and productivity, gain insights from data, improve marketing strategies, enhance.
Full disclosure. Everything starting at the third paragraph until this one was written by an AI program using the query: “Write a 700-word article on why small and mid-sized businesses should be using AI.” It took less than a minute. I know there are concerns about AI and how it could be used and we need to be aware of that. But this genie is out of the bottle. If you don’t allocate time figuring out how to use it productively for your company, I’m certain your competitors will soon. This is going to be the next big thing that changes the world as we know it.
